I had an upper molar extracted. Are there dire consequences if I don't fill the space?

15 years ago I had the same one removed and I was told I would have to get cadaver tissue sewn in to replace the gap and that I better get a bridge in there and all sorts of crap or else my gums would recede and all of my teeth would separate and fall out. I said "be fukkin' that cadaver sh!t!" and I left it alone and never went back. I have had ZERO problems. None of my teeth have moved at all. I can chew fine and it doesn't show. Stupid ay-hole money grubbing scum dentist! I stopped going to him way back. The dentist I've had since then told me the ay-hole should have lost his license because he didn't know what he was talking about. BTW, I'm nearly 50.
